Accomplishment of Clinical Practice

The Nursing students from Batch 6 at SIMAD University have successfully completed their one-year clinical practice at Dr. Sumait Hospital, marking a pivotal moment in their educational journey. This extended clinical exposure has not only sharpened their nursing skills but has also provided them with practical, real-world experience, empowering them to transition from theoretical learning to hands-on patient care in a professional healthcare setting.

A Year of Intensive Training and Learning

Over the course of their clinical practice, the students were fully immersed in a wide array of healthcare duties, gaining comprehensive experience across various departments of Dr. Sumait Hospital. Under the supervision of experienced healthcare professionals, they participated in essential clinical activities, including:

  • Patient Care and Monitoring: Students were involved in day-to-day patient assessments, administering medications, and closely monitoring patient vitals. They were taught how to recognize changes in patient conditions and respond appropriately.
  • Medical Procedures and Interventions: The students assisted in routine medical procedures, from wound care and intravenous (IV) placements to more complex nursing interventions. They gained confidence in performing these tasks under the guidance of trained nurses and doctors.
  • Patient Education and Support: Recognizing the importance of holistic care, the students provided education to patients and their families on disease prevention, post-operative care, and healthy living practices. They also learned how to offer emotional support to patients, ensuring a compassionate and empathetic approach to patient care.
  • Collaboration with Healthcare Teams: Throughout their clinical practice, students worked as part of multidisciplinary healthcare teams, collaborating with doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, and other specialists. This team-based approach gave them insight into how patient care is managed collectively, enhancing their communication and teamwork skills.

Enhancing Professional Skills and Knowledge

This clinical experience allowed the students to apply the theoretical knowledge they had gained in the classroom to practical, real-life situations. It significantly enhanced their critical thinking, clinical decision-making, and problem-solving abilities. They learned to assess patients’ needs more effectively, make informed clinical judgments, and prioritize care. The hands-on experience provided a deeper understanding of the complexities of healthcare delivery, including the challenges faced by medical teams and the importance of effective communication in ensuring quality care.

Gaining Insight into Healthcare Challenges

In addition to their clinical skills development, the students gained valuable insights into the broader healthcare landscape, particularly the challenges faced by hospitals and healthcare workers in Somalia. Working at Dr. Sumait Hospital, the students observed firsthand the pressures that come with providing care in a busy healthcare environment, while also learning how to manage these challenges effectively. They were exposed to a range of cases, from routine medical issues to more complex health conditions, providing them with the ability to adapt quickly to various situations. This exposure has shaped their ability to work in diverse healthcare settings and equipped them with the confidence to handle a wide range of patient needs.

Preparing for the Future

The clinical practice at Dr. Sumait Hospital has been an integral part of the students’ nursing education, bridging the gap between theory and practice. As they move forward in their careers, these students are well-prepared to provide high-quality care, demonstrate leadership, and make meaningful contributions to healthcare in Somalia and beyond. SIMAD University remains committed to providing its nursing students with the best possible clinical training opportunities. The success of Nursing Batch 6 in completing their year-long clinical practice is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and the strong partnership between the university and Dr. Sumait Hospital.
